The send-off tour for the 2009 Summer National Senior Games, presented by Humana, will visit Denver today with special guest and Olympic gold medalist, Peggy Fleming. The biennial games, the largest multi-sport event in the world for seniors, will be held Aug. 1-15 in Palo Alto, Calif.

The send-off will take place at 10 a.m. at Skyline Park, 1551 Arapahoe St., Denver. Speakers will include Fleming; Dan Oftedahl, president of Humana-Colorado; Dr. Edward Leary, president of Humana Central West Senior Products; and Senior Games representative Kate Amack, as well as a two Senior Games athletes and a performance from the 2008 Rocky Mountain Senior Games gold medalists the Dancin’ Divas.

More than 10,000 athletes ages 50 and above, including more than 250

from Colorado, will compete in the 2009 Summer National Senior Games, which emphasize vitality at all ages. The athletes will compete in more than 800 events over 15 days, including track and field, swimming, volleyball, triathlon, golf and many more.

Among them are two inspiring athletes from the Denver area, Dorothy Haskins and Leroy Warren.

Dorothy Haskins, 69, from Colorado Springs, Colo., is a track and field athlete, competing in the 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter and 800 meter sprints. After a back injury, Dorothy nursed herself back to health and is able to do what she loves best – run. “Although I qualified for the 2009 Summer Games, I have to do what’s best for my health and sit this one out,” said Haskins. “But, just wait! I’ll be there wining medals in 2011!”


Leroy Warren, 57, from Denver, is also a track and field athlete, competing in the 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter sprints and the long jump. Volunteering for the Rocky Mountain Senior Games, Leroy saw the spirit of camaraderie, competition and athleticism embodied in those competing. “I decided to put on a track suit and start running,” says Warren. “I haven’t stopped since, and I’ve never felt better or healthier in my life. Competing in the 2009 Summer Games in Palo Alto is just icing on the cake!”


Humana and the National Senior Games are recognizing these amazing athletes with an Olympic-sized send-off that will celebrate their accomplishments and champion the benefits of adopting a healthy and active lifestyle.
