2014-03-27 17:25:56 - Happiness may not grow on trees, but in Tampa, happiness was placed into the hands of thousands.
The Church of Scientology of Tampa hosted a successful open house in honor of the United Nation’s International Day of Happiness. In addition to those coming in to the Church for a tour and to learn more about happiness, volunteers passed out 10,000 copies of The Way to Happiness by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.
“The Church, located in the heart of Ybor City, is regularly open for the community to tour through, but the Day of Happiness was special,” said Mimi Kintzel, the Church’s Community Affairs Director. “Life isn’t always easy or happy, but if you have a guide map, you can get there.”
The guide map in question is The Way to Happiness, a non-religious moral code based on common
sense. It was written by Mr. Hubbard in 1980 to stem what he called “the depowering” of the human spirit. The twenty-one precepts that make up the code include points such as “Love and Help Children” and “Do Not Harm a Person of Good Will.”
While guests to the open house could avail themselves of a book on film version of The Way to Happiness, 10,000 people in the Tampa Bay area were given their own copies of the booklet, through one on one distribution by dozens of volunteers.
“The United Nations realized that well-being is a part of the welfare of a country,” said Ms. Kintzel. “Because of this, they established the Day of Happiness. The world news dwells so much on what is wrong with the world, here was a day when we could look at what is right.”
“A woman gave a copy of the booklet to the receptionist at the gym she goes to. On her way out the door, the receptionist stopped the woman to thank her and give her a hug for the booklet,” said Ms. Kintzel. “That was what this day was all about, making others happy.”
In the Way to Happiness, Mr. Hubbard wrote, “The happiness or unhappiness of others you could name is important to you. Without too much trouble, using this book, you can help them survive and lead happier lives…It is in your power to point the way to a less dangerous and happier life.”
