OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/10/09 -- The World Cup events in speed skating, November 5-8, 2009, provided an excellent opportunity to showcase the performance of our talented Canadian athletes. Canada was very well represented at the events by a strong team. Canadians across the country were proud to see the results of the hard work and dedication of our speed skaters.

Charles Hamelin emerged with four medals at the short track in Montreal, including two gold medals for the 500 and 1500 metre events. And Christine Nesbitt received two gold medals for her performance in the 1000 metre and 1500 metre long track events in Berlin.

As Minister of State (Sport) and on behalf of the people of Canada, I would like to congratulate Charles Hamelin and Christine Nesbitt on their stellar achievements and commend the other members of the Canadian team on their strong performances. With less than 100 days to the opening of the 2010 Winter Olympics, our Government is committed to helping our athletes succeed and own the podium, including our Canadian speed skaters.
