2012-01-31 17:56:00 - The Bionic Ear Show visits Surrey school

The children of St James the Great Nursery and Primary school, Thornton Heath are looking forward to an educational treat when the award winning Bionic Ear Show makes a visit on 1 February. The show, brought to Surrey by national charity Deafness Research UK includes ‘the worlds largest ear’ to demonstrate to pupils how their ears work and what can be done to prevent hearing loss at an early age. Sponsored by BUPA and the BIG Lottery Fund, the award winning show is a fun and interactive event for all audiences.

The Bionic Ear Show is adapted by enthusiastic presenter Tobin May for audiences of all ages and will be engaging the younger children from St James the Great school

with fun games while delivering the important underlying message about caring for their ears and hearing.

Research carried out by Deafness Research UK has found the younger generation may be faced with developing hearing conditions at a much earlier age, due to the increase in use of modern devices. While targeting the younger generation the show will focus on protecting children’s hearing from loud noises, and safe listening when using MP3 players.

Audiences do not need any scientific or specialist knowledge to appreciate the serious message associated with the show, as using the 22ft ‘world’s largest ear’, Tobin will demonstrate how the ear works in a fun and interactive way.

“While the revolution in MP3 and phone technology has given us all the benefit of music on the move, an unwelcome side effect is we are pumping up the volume into our ears and at a far earlier age than ever before,” said Vivienne Michael, Chief Executive of Deafness Research UK.

“At Deafness Research UK, we are always seeking to find new ways in which to help those with hearing conditions carry on leading as normal a life as possible, as well as researching ways in which to prevent hearing loss altogether. The purpose of the Bionic Ear Show is not to tell the children at St James the Great School to stop listening to their MP3 players but to simply point out they should be turning down the volume to listen to their favourite sounds safely.”
