Softheme Technical Director Rustam Nurgudin shares his knowledge and expresses his opinion about one of the latest application development trends, programming for iPhones.
Today Rustam Nurgudin, the Technical Director for Ukrainian software outsourcing company Softheme, answered the questions of the company’s press office about iPhone programming as one of the most currently intriguing and popular software development trends. Mr. Nurgudin discussed the peculiarities associated with iPhone development and expressed his vision of the trend’s potential perspectives.
“First of all, when starting to develop applications for iPhone, a developer should have strong knowledge of Open C language as well as iPhone API, the library of standard components for iPhone. There is one more separate sphere of iPhone programming – development of games and graphic programs. Applications of this type have a bit different structure because they utilize the OpenGL technology instead of standard visual classes.”
“Our
experience shows that developing for iPhone is not so complicated. One of our web developers started learning to program for iPhone from scratch. In several months he already fully mastered the technology and delivered quality software solutions developed in accordance with standards and requirements of Apple,” highlights Mr. Nurgudin.
Talking about the difficulties that may arise when programming for iPhone, Mr. Nurgudin believes that the main complexity is connected with testing and debugging on the iPhone device itself. It is the general problem for all mobile devices, mentions Softheme CTO. He claims the existence of two options in this case: either buying license from Apple, or cracking a device – the so-called “Jail Break” procedure. In the latter case it is possible to program only under iPhone OS 2.0 operating system.
“Yet, we do not recommend programming without Apple license due to a wide array of problems a company may face associated with the violation of intellectual property rights,” adds Mr. Nurgudin.
“What types of applications can be developed for iPhone? Practically, any type. The main thing is for the application functionality to coincide with the device capabilities. iPhone gives access to the Internet, so the most diverse client-server applications can be developed for it,” explains Mr. Nurgudin. “OpenGL gives freedom for games development, GeoTargeting enables creating full-featured GPRS systems, photo applications, etc. Don’t forget about the possibility of creating movies like you do with Windows Movie Maker.”
“Softheme has already gained a wealthy experience of commercial iPhone applications development for the customers in the USA, and recently we developed an AudioRecorder application for one of our clients. The core of the application was to output diverse instructive information to a user, for example, peculiarities of life in a metropolis or a short juridical FAQ. Besides, the application contained a test in which a user could dictate and make an audio record of his answers while various device users could later review them, compare, re-record, and many more.”
Regarding the main perspectives of iPhone development, Softheme CTO expresses his confidence that the big future awaits this trend and connects it with the highest sales rate of iPhone devices worldwide as well the upcoming launch of the new iPhone 3G. The latter device, operating on the new iPhone OS 3.0, possesses faster internet and a video camera, and this means that new device capabilities will offer a lot of new applications, and, first of all, it is video recording apps, says Mr. Nurgudin.
