even though United States recycling efforts over the past two decades have accelerated, our 1,654 domestic landfills still accumulate 133 million tons per year. How much trash is that? Try the weight of the Empire State Building- every day.

Moreover, garbage is more than just the empty containers. You must consider the water, energy, raw materials and all of the waste produced during an item's manufacture and delivery when measuring a container's total environmental cost.

As the Tellus Institute environmental cost study concluded that while consumer packaging occupies an astounding 50 percent of the space in our municipal landfills, more than 95 percent of its environmental cost occurs in the manufacturing process. So even if you recycle a glass bottle or aluminum can, you're still losing about 70 percent of the energy that went into manufacturing it. That means you're not being as Green as you think you are.
