- Slate Magazine Jennifer Lee, 703-469-2671 Jennifer.Lee@wpni.com Slate, the daily online magazine, today announced it will have a new publisher, John Alderman. Alderman is currently the Vice President of Business Development at Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive (WPNI), which owns Slate. On April 1, 2008, Alderman will succeed Cliff Sloan, who is leaving his role as Slate's Publisher and WPNI's General
Counsel to be a partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher, and Flom LLP.
"I am thrilled to be joining Slate," said Alderman. "It's a unique chance to return to my publishing roots and work with the original and still most innovative magazine on the web."
Before joining WPNI, Alderman was VP of Business Development at The Away Network, an online travel publisher, and General Manager of Outside Online.
"We look forward to supporting John in his new role. He's well-suited for the position, given his successful ventures across WPNI and strong publishing background," said Caroline H. Little, CEO and Publisher of WPNI. "While we're excited for John and Slate, enormous thanks and appreciation are due to our friend and colleague Cliff, whom we will miss, and we wish him success on his next journey."
During Sloan's tenure, Slate has reached record-high traffic and has won numerous awards. Sloan has also been key to giving Slate a reputation for innovative advertising programs.

We're confident, though, that we have found a worthy successor in John Alderman," said Jacob Weisberg, Slate's Editor.
Alderman will continue to oversee business development across WPNI in addition to his role as Publisher of Slate. With Sloan's departure, former Deputy General Counsel Sherrese Smith will become General Counsel.
