The FastStart program continues to guarantee customers 40:1 deduplication ratios, and if not achieved, participants will receive required additional disk free. According to The 451 Group, an industry analyst firm, in its June 2007 report entitled "Data De-duplication: Changing the nature of data protection," de-duplication works best for data that displays a high level of redundancy. That makes it excellent for some data types, such as text files and databases. But identifying redundancies in some data types - especially random data files such as images, video and audio - is much more difficult. If there's little or no duplicate data, then obviously de-duplication products don't help much.
