Strong bones are essential to healthy and independent aging, which is why SCAN Health Plan Arizona :
is offering free “Healthy Bones Exercise” classes. Hour-long Healthy Bones Exercise will be taught twice each Wednesday for six weeks from Sept. 15 through Oct. 22. Class times are 12:30–1:30 pm and 2:00-3:00 pm, and take place at the SCAN Connections Resource Center, 1313 E. Osborn Road, Suite 150, in Phoenix.
The Healthy Bones Exercise classes are designed to enhance participants’ balance and strength. Instructors combine resistance exercises and strength training using free weights, stretch bands, balls and aerobic activity set to music. The class is open to all seniors, but space is limited. Health Plan Arizona is to help seniors remain healthy and independent,” said Susan Cypert, SCAN’s senior community resource specialist. “Our resource center takes an active role in offering free health-enhancing classes, informational workshops and referrals to community organizations to anyone in the community at no charge.”
Other upcoming classes offered by the SCAN Connections Resource Center include two Personal Safety for Seniors workshops and a Healthy Nutrition for Seniors class.
- Personal Safety for Seniors takes place from 9:00-10:00 am on Sept. 21 and Oct. 19. Led by Phoenix Police Lieutenant Jacqui MacConnell, the personal safety course will address how participants can reduce their risk of becoming a victim of crimes that commonly affect seniors.
- Healthy Nutrition for Seniors is scheduled for Nov. 10 from 10:00-11:00 am. Participants will learn about the role of nutrition in energy and good health, portion distortion, nutritional guidelines as people age, and maintaining a healthy weight.
Registration is free for all programs, but space is limited. To register, call 602-778-3420. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
