2013-10-30 22:17:47 - Based on a combination of pointspread and previous results, the Seattle Seahawks appear to be set for its second consecutive low-scoring contest
According to the sports handicapping website Vegas Experts, the Seattle Seahawks-Tampa Bay Buccaneers game on Sunday features a strong trend that dates back a decade and pertains to the game’s total of 40 that was established by oddsmakers.
The Seahawks are coming off a close 14-9 victory on Monday night against the St. Louis Rams, a contest in which it was favored by 11.5 points. The website compiled research to look at teams in similar circumstances: double-digit home favorites that won, but failed to cover the pointspread in its previous game, one which also finished below the Las Vegas betting total.
In Sunday’s game, Seattle is a prohibitive home favorite of 16.5 points, and teams in this situation have seen 13 of
16 games finish below the listed total contest since the start of the 2003 season.
This game will mark the second time this season that the trend has become relevant: in Week Two, the Thursday night game between the New England Patriots and New York Jets had the Patriots as 11.5 favorites just four days after its game against the Buffalo Bills. In that game, New England was a 10.5-point favorite, and won 23-21 on a last second field goal. The Patriots then defeated the Jets, 13-10, coming far under the 43 total.
Last season, the trend split its two contests: the Week Nine contest between the Green Bay Packers and Arizona Cardinals went past the 44 total in a 31-17 final, while the Patriots-Miami Dolphins game ended far below the contest’s 47 with a 28-0 score.
