2014-03-20 08:33:31 - Lucknow: As soon as BJP announced Narendra Modi as its candidate from Varanasi, Congress dashed its search for a suitable candidate to give Modi a tough fight in the run for seats.
However, even after a thorough search and successive meetings with its chief election committee, the party couldn’t find a single candidate of that stature who can be fielded against Modi.
Reports also reveal that the party tried offering the seat to Sachin Tendulkar, who is also the party’s Rajya Sabha member but had to suffer disappointment as Tendulkar was not interested in contesting elections.
As a result of this, congress is expected to put all its attention on the local candidate Ajay Rai, as he has a loyal vote bank of more than 1 lakh voters. But he is not yet declared as the official candidate.
Congress had won from Varanasi in 2004, when its candidate Rajesh K. Mishra had fetched more than
2 lakh votes. Later in 2009 however, Mishra had lost to BJP’s Murli Manohar Joshi, falling on the fourth position. Ajay Rai, a SP candidate at that time had secured the third position.
