This does not happen every day the first number plate to be registered in Edinburgh 'S1' is going up for sale at auction and could fetch a massive £250,000. It was bought by Lord Kingsburgh in 1903 and has been in the family ever since. S1 number plate up for sale
Lord Kingsburgh, who is also known as Sir John H A MacDonald, was the Lord Justice Clerk of Scotland between 1888 and 1919. Being one of Scotland's first car owners he was a pioneer of motoring throughout the UK, a founding member of the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland, which later became the
RAC, and was the first president of the Scottish Automobile Club, founded in 1899.
Toby Wilson, head of Bonham's automobilia department, said: "The number plate (licence) has come directly from the family, and has been with them since it was first bought.
"I would imagine it would appeal to a patriotic Scot who wants to drive around with S1 which could stand for Scotland 1.
"Obviously, it could also appeal to someone called Simon or whose initials are SI.
"However, so far the interest we have received is from neither a Scot or a person called Simon.
"First and foremost, it will be someone who understands motoring history."
The most expensive number plate in UK history was the F1 number plate sold earlier on in the year for £440,625, before that M1 was sold at auction for £331,500, so it is not unreasonable to expect this number plate to reach somewhere in this price range too.
