www.rohmhaas.com - Specialty materials company Rohm and Haas (NYSE:ROH) announced today that its close collaboration with equipment co-suppliers is helping packaging converters succeed on multiple fronts: speeding production, lowering costs, producing innovative laminations, improving food safety and meeting sustainability goals. Nordmeccanica Group, Paperplast International and Rohm and Haas have matched environmentally advanced adhesives with the industry's
fastest, most innovative lamination machinery. "Together, our three companies offer complete solutions, which is particularly important in a very competitive, dynamic market that stretches customer resources to the limit while asking for better quality and enhanced performances," says Dana Mosora, Rohm and Haas European market manager, Packaging. The three companies jointly presented innovative solutions to attendees at Drupa 2008. Continues Mosora: "To help customers succeed against domestic and foreign competition, we've taken some of the guesswork out of how best to increase production speed, provide value, and maintain high performance while meeting increasingly tough food safety and environmental regulations."
The world's largest manufacturer of coating and lamination equipment, Nordmeccanica, offers the Super Duplex Compact 600 SL, which customers predominantly use to produce flexible packaging lamination structures for food. The equipment processes paper and films like polypropylene and polyester at speeds up to 600 meters per minute. "The Super Duplex produces excellent laminations faster at a lower price while meeting food safety regulations, eliminating volatile organic compound emissions, consuming less energy, and increasing worker safety," explains Vincenzo Cerciello, Nordmeccanica's vice president of technology, who says the company built flexibility into the machinery, enabling it to easily handle different film gauges or vary run length, for example. "This system is the 'total package' so to speak, and customers tell us it makes them more competitive." Rohm and Haas specifically developed its innovative solventless adhesive Mor-Free(TM) L 705 + C79 to run on extremely fast laminators like the Super Duplex.
Paperplast also delivers superb flexibility through its WD2 laminator. "The W stands for 'wet' and the D stands for 'dry'," says Liliana Carzaniga, Paperplast's export sales manager. "The equipment runs a diverse range of substrates from paper to film to metallized films, using waterbased adhesives or dry thermal technology - films with an integrated adhesive layer. Customers get two options for the same price." The equipment produces both matte and gloss laminations, though Carzaniga finds that gloss lamination is increasingly in demand for luxury product packaging. "High end cognac bottles, for example, may have very shiny labels that convey quality," she explains. "With our machinery, water-based adhesives now produce a beautiful gloss very close to the gloss we previously saw only with solvent-based choices." The WD2 improves productivity through very fast speeds of 80 meters per minute during gloss lamination runs - a speed that previously challenged water-based bonding agents. "Rohm and Haas's new gloss lamination adhesive, Robond(TM) GL 53-350, doesn't foam at high speed," says Carzaniga, "freeing converters to reach maximum production rates." Paperplast and Rohm and Haas jointly demonstrated the combination to Drupa 2008 attendees.
