Restorative Remedies Announces Natural Products and Simple Regimen to Build and Maintain Bone Mass Although Loss of Bone Mass Threatens Quality of Life for Many Post-Menopausal Women -- and a Surprising Number of Older Men -- an All-Natural Program Using Strontium, Calcium and Vitamin D Can Help Prevent or Reverse the Loss of Bone Mass

DEL MAR, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/20/09 -- Restorative Remedies LLC, a manufacturer and distributor of condition-specific supplements that feature unique combinations of highly effective natural remedies, today announced three products that can work in combination to prevent the severity of the loss of bone mass. This reduction in bone mass as measured by changes in bone density -- a condition common in older women but surprisingly prevalent among older men as well -- leads to osteoporosis which affects ten million Americans. Up to 18 million more suffer from low bone mass which will likely develop into osteoporosis unless corrective action is taken.

The combination program includes three supplements: Calcium Citrate-Malate, Vitamin D3, and "Bone Density" -- a high-potency source of the earth element strontium. Although calcium supplements have received a great deal of attention in the past few decades and millions of Americans now include calcium in their daily intake either through supplements or fortified fruit drinks, many of these people do not get the full benefit of their bone-building program because of a vitamin D deficiency which limits their body's ability to absorb the calcium. Bone Density -- actually strontium citrate, a highly-potent salt of strontium -- provides the important third component for building bone mass.

Strontium is chemically related to calcium and the two elements are in some cases interchangeable in many of the body's metabolic processes. Like calcium, strontium is an important building block of the bone matrix, contributing to bone architecture and strength. Ironically, the absorption of strontium by bone tissue was widely publicized in the 1950s because, at the time, strontium-90 -- a radioactive isotope of the element -- was present in the environment as a result of atmospheric nuclear testing. This radioactive form of strontium was absorbed by the bone and contributed to cancer and the debilitating loss of bone strength. Strontium-90 is far less present today; a strontium supplement like Bone Density, taken daily, can accelerate the replacement of radioactive strontium with the natural, bone-building form of strontium.

Clearly, the three components work together to comprise a bone-building program that's highly effective -- not only preventing the loss of bone mass but able to actually restore bone density and strength. This improved bone strength also reduces the likelihood of injury to the lumbar spine and hips -- the two most common sites of bone damage in people diagnosed with osteoporosis or the less severe condition, osteopenia.

"In treating the whole person and preparing patients for decades of continuing health, I see on a daily basis how low bone density diminishes quality of life," says Dr. Alex Shikhman, noted rheumatologist and chairman of Restorative Remedies' Scientific Advisory Board. "As bone density is reduced -- and this can happen for a variety of reasons, ranging from hormonal changes to poor diet to lack of exercise -- the likelihood of injury goes up and the painful duration of recovery time lengthens. By putting my patients on a simple and effective bone-building program, I can keep them active and help them avoid injury altogether."

Dr. Shikhman points to studies emphasizing the importance of taking the three components -- calcium, vitamin D, and strontium -- in combination and he lays out a strict but easy-to-follow program for his patients: take a strontium supplement (two tablets containing 750mg of strontium citrate each) daily on an empty stomach and then, twelve hours later with food, take both a calcium supplement (at least 1000mg, daily) and vitamin D3, the active form of vitamin D (at least 2000 units).

"This regimen will improve bone density and strength at least as well as recently available medications prescribed for preventing and treating osteoporosis," Dr. Shikhman reports. "And because these three bone-building supplements are natural, there are few if any side effects. To enhance the effects of this bone-building program, I also encourage my patients to eat well and get plenty of exercise, including at least some activity that puts moderate mechanical stress on the bone because this challenges the body to respond by rebuilding bone tissue."

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, the annual public health costs of injuries, due to low bone density, are staggering -- estimated at $19 billion in 2005 and expected to rise 50% by 2025 because of our aging population. Clearly, turning people's attitudes toward prevention will help hold the line on these costs and, at the same time, improve quality of life for millions of Americans in the coming years.
