According to the General Administration of Customs of PRC, the import of synthetic resins by China was 11.99 million tons in the first half of 2008, up by 7.9% year-on-year, while the import value was $15.34bn, up by 18.8%. Demand for imported general-purpose resins reduced due to the high import prices and the rapid increase of output of general-purpose resins
in China itself. The import volumes of PVC (polyvinyl chloride), polyethylene and polystyrene, three of the five most popular general-purpose resins, were 666,000 tons, 2.46 million tons and 622,000 tons, down by 11.7%, 1.6% and 1.1%, respectively; while the import volumes of polypropylene and ABS resin (acrylonitrile butadiene-styrene resin) were up only 2.7% and 6.6% respectively.
Since the country's electronic information, automobile, real estate and other industries grow rapidly, and the level of consumption of Chinese residents is elevating during China's 11th "Five-Year Plan" period, there would be huge rooms for synthetic resins to develop in the country. Still in the same period, the demand for synthetic resins would continue to increase at about 10% every year, almost the same rate during the 10th "Five-Year Plan" period. By 2010, the apparent consumption of synthetic resins in China would be 64 million tons, which would be 26 million tons more than that during the 10th "Five-Year Plan" period. The output of synthetic resins is expected to grow at the average annual rate of 12% 2006-2010. And by 2010, the output is expected to be 37 million tons, 16 million tons more than that during the 10th "Five-Year Plan" period.
