Massage therapy was once confined to spas and health clubs, but many larger companies are offering the service to employees. Employers now realize that massage is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension leading to a more productive employee.
“Not all companies feel the need to, or are large enough, to offer massage therapy, but employees can still take advantage of the benefits. Many of our clients book massage therapy appointments on their way home from work. They walk in tense and stressed, but after a session our guests leave a different person,” states Judy Schwinn, owner of RC Spa and Beauty Center in Rancho Cucamonga, Ca.

“Massage is a general term for pressing, rubbing and manipulating your skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. There are also different techniques such as Swedish and Deep Tissue massage. Swedish massage therapy is a gentle form that uses long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping to help relax.
“Deep massage therapy technique uses slower, more-forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue.
“In addition to being an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension, massage may also be helpful for ailments that can include anxiety, fibromyalgia, headaches and soft tissue strains or injuries.
Massage therapy has been practiced for thousands of years with techniques that involve pressing, rubbing, or manipulating muscles and other soft tissues with hands and fingers. Sometimes even forearms, elbows, or feet are used.
According to a 2007 American Massage Therapy Association survey, almost a quarter of all adult Americans had at least one massage in the previous year. And, they have a wide range of reasons for doing so. More and more people -- especially baby boomers -- recognize the health benefits of massage. They choose from among many massage styles to get relief from symptoms or to heal injuries, to help with certain health conditions, and to promote overall wellness.
“We know massage therapy works, because almost 100% of our first time clients, re-book appointments for the future,” concludes Schwinn.
