A white paper published today by The FactPoint Group, a Silicon Valley-based research and consulting firm, quantifies significant cost and efficiency gains at Corus Automotive Engineering Group (AEG), a leading engineering company using a private cloud solution powered by Univa UD and Intel technologies. Corus is part of Tata Steel, one of the top ten steel producers in the world.

The

solution, based on the Intel® Xeon® Processor 5500 series and Univa private cloud software running technical computing applications, has delivered measurable benefits in under three months. According to the report, these include an 80% reduction in systems administration time, cost savings exceeding $115,000 and a 200% increase in application performance.

“We couldn’t be happier with the project results to date,” said Mike Twelves, IT Systems Manager at Corus AEG. “With the Univa private cloud we are moving complexity out of the system and at the same time improving efficiency across application processing, license utilization and system admin workflow. The Intel Xeon processor 5500 series should absolutely fly for our massively parallel processing applications, upping the performance of the system even further.”

“With Univa and Intel, we are positioning Corus strongly for the rebound of the auto industry, our key customer,” Twelves added.

In addition to documenting gains achieved in the first three months, the report also quantifies expected efficiency gains from the second half of the project, including an anticipated 40% reduction in power consumption and 82% reduction in hardware footprint.

“Ultimately, our goal is to provide a high-performance, resilient and robust IT infrastructure to support the group’s needs and to reduce our operating costs by 20%,” said Professor Jon King, Director, Corus AEG.
“Transforming our infrastructure with more efficient tools like Univa’s private cloud and Intel Xeon 5500 architecture is an important part of that strategy.”

“By adopting this state-of-the-art cloud environment powered by Univa and Intel, Corus AEG is proving itself as a leader and innovator in the field of engineering,” said Jason Liu, Univa CEO. “We’re excited to continue working with Corus and Intel through the second half of the implementation, where further gains are likely to be achieved.”

“These results underscore the value of Intel Xeon architecture for cloud environments,” said Billy Cox, Director, Cloud Software Strategy at Intel Corporation. “The use of private clouds for this type of compute demand is ideal for Intel Xeon where performance and efficiency are key factors. By working with Univa we are enabling customers to easily tap into this power for their cloud requirements.”
