Liferay Introduces Open Source Collaboration Software with Office® Integration

2008-12-03 00:26:02 -

Liferay, Inc., a provider of leading social collaboration and portal technologies, recently introduced Liferay Social Office, a new open source solution that allows enterprise teams to dynamically share documents and collaborate using Web 2.0 and social computing tools in a secure enterprise environment. Social Office provides integration with Microsoft Office® as an alternative to SharePoint® at a fraction of the cost and rounds out the package with blogs, message boards, wikis, shared calendars, webmail and social networking functionality. The beta version is now available for download under an open source license.
"Users resist adopting web-based applications that don"t integrate with the way they work," said Bryan Cheung, Liferay CEO. "Today"s corporate world continues to rely heavily on popular office suites, so Liferay designed Social Office to enhance existing workflow with new social computing capabilities, all without the prohibitive costs of proprietary software." Liferay Social Office allows users to open, save, lock, and share documents stored in Social Office directly from Microsoft Office®. Users can then share and collaborate around these documents using Social Office"s built-in social computing tools, including:
- Collaboration " Liferay"s Wikis, Message Boards and Blogs are fully integrated with a single ratings, comments, and tagging system to facilitate brainstorming, dialogue and knowledge sharing.
- Social Networking " All tools included in Liferay Social Office are tied together seamlessly with the latest in social networking functionality, including an activity tracker that displays a history of team, individual, and friends" activities; integrated instant messaging; and the ability to invite users.
- Email & Calendar " Users can pull in their existing email accounts and calendar events to access their work life in one online location. A full AJAX-based webmail client can be configured to interface with many popular IMAP email servers.
- Tagging " All content (documents, wiki articles, blog posts and message board entries) is taggable, and a list of related content is shown next to any given content item in Social Office.
"Liferay Social Office is designed to become a natural extension of everyone"s work experience," said Cheung. "Teams can dynamically synchronize their activity with minimal additional effort. And with simple one-click setup and a robust enterprise architecture, Social Office is both quick to deploy and inexpensive to maintain over the long-term."
Liferay Social Office is offered at no cost and no risk under an open source license. For more information, please visit www.liferay.com/products/social_office.
