International Living Live and Invest in Mexico Seminar

Nearly 180 to Attend International Living's Live and Invest in Mexico Seminar to Learn About the World's Hottest Retirement Destination

2008-11-03 19:03:48 - The International Living Live and Invest in Mexico Seminar kicks off on Thursday with 180 attendees -- most from the U.S. and Canada -- who want to learn more about living, retiring, and investing in Mexico. Reasons for moving out of the U.S. and Canada vary, but most are looking for a better climate, better access to quality health care, and a lower cost of living.

Baltimore, MD November 3, 2008 -- Dan Prescher, the publisher of International Living magazine, has lived in Ecuador, Panama, and Nicaragua. But the place he's chosen to make his home for the long term is Mexico.

Why? 'Mexico is easy,' said Prescher. 'It's about as close to the States as you can get, but with better year-round weather. It's easy to get a visa here, easy to find quality healthcare, and despite what you might believe, it's easy to buy real estate. If you know where to look, you can find some real bargains, in fact.'

In the last seven years, Prescher and his wife Suzan Haskins have lived in three cities in Mexico: Ajijic on the shore of Lake Chapala, San Miguel de Allende in the colonial highlands, and Merida in the state of Yucatan. Merida is where International Living's Live and Invest in Mexico Seminar is being held, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Nearly 180 attendees -- primarily from the U.S. and Canada -- are expected to attend the event.

'More and more Americans are actively looking to retire outside the United States,' Prescher said, 'and Mexico is a big draw. There are more American retirees here than in any other country.'

Prescher pointed out that now is a particularly good time to visit Mexico, with the peso trading at a record low against the dollar. 'Mexico's economy is strong overall,' he said, 'but right now our U.S. and Canadian dollars hold more buying power than ever in Mexico.'

According to a survey completed by many of those who will attend the International Living seminar in Mexico, most attendees (nearly 90%) have visited Mexico before. The top three reasons cited for selecting Mexico as a possible relocation destination include the low cost of living, warm weather, and affordable healthcare.

More than 75% of those surveyed said they plan to relocate to Mexico within the next two years and that they would buy property there.
The seminar will take place over three days and will feature presentations by experts in issues of concern to foreigners considering a move to Mexico: financial planning, expat tax and legal issues, real estate, mortgage financing, and more. International Living editors and correspondents from around the country will speak about lifestyle opportunities in places like Merida, Campeche, Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, Huatulco, San Miguel de Allende, and Lake Chapala, among others. There will also be an exhibit hall with service providers who can help facilitate a move to Mexico.

International Living Publisher Dan Prescher, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, will emcee the event. 'This will be our biggest event ever in Mexico,' he said. 'And it's a clear indication that with the costs of almost everything going up -- including taxes and necessities like gasoline, food, and health care -- more people than ever, especially retirees, are looking to places like Mexico for a higher-quality, lower-cost lifestyle.'
