Thousands of motorcycle buyers are expected to pack the 85,000-plus square foot exhibition area from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thousands of "bikers" and "wannabe bikers" will gather Sunday, October 26, 2008 at the Rock Financial Showplace to buy, sell and swap motorcycles, parts, accessories and experiences from one of Michigan's longest riding seasons in memory.
Halloween is around the corner and bikers will arrive in traditional costume (as some might sayclad from head-to-toe in leather and sporting bandanas, vests cluttered with pins collected from ‘rides' or events from across the country, T-shirts that make a statement or prove "I've been there and seen that," says event director Chad Dutmers.
Giant Motorcycle Swap Meets, for the past 33 years, are famous for offering "everything for rider or machine.for men and women who love to ride motorcycles and the lifestyle...whether it's street, dirt or touring. The hard-core biker or the casual rider will find what they need and at "swap meet prices."
Finding everything is no understatement...Dan & Kelly Dwyer of Michigan Memorial Gardens...offer the ultimate "last ride" via their "Tombstone Hearse.an 1800s replica hearse...that Fisher Body would be proud to call their own...pulled by a chromed-out Harley-Davidson Trike. "When you've ridden motorcycles all your life and shared the road with friends for those many years...that last ride to your final resting place can be in a Tombstone Hearse," adds Dutmers. Clubs, owners groups, associations and enthusiasts have taken advantage of this service, often with hundreds of motorcycles in procession. www.michmempark.com/unique_hearse.htm
Also on display will be the 'U of M' Chopper built by Orange County Choppers. The bike is scheduled to go to auction at the 18th annual Antique and Special Interest Motorcycle Auction Jan. 8-10, 2009 in Las Vegas. Proceeds will go to benefit C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and The University of Michigan.
When riding season ends, bikers begin the process of replacing worn, damaged or obsolete chrome, paint, seats, parts, tires and apparel. You don't find these items at the mall, you find them at the Giant Motorcycle Swap Meet.
'With nearly one out of every four bikers in the U.S. living in Michigan and its four border states, the nine swap meets we sponsor give bikers the chance to be around other bikers and to support the economic interests that are vital to keeping the industry strong,' stresses Dutmers. 'A lot of bikers started coming with their dads when they were kids. Now those bikers are bringing their own kids.'
The swap meet will feature the largest collection of motorcycle vendors under one roof in the Midwest. Cyclists attending will see new '08 and '09 bikes as well as used bikes - street, dirt, metric, touring, cruising, trikes, choppers, custom bikes, and trailers.
Admission is $10 for adults and $3 for ages 6-12. Rock Financial Showplace can be accessed using three convenient exits off I-96 - exits 159, 160 or 162.
