Extreme Fitness Inc., a leading fitness club operator in the Greater Toronto Area, has teamed up with FastLife, the world's largest speed dating and singles event service, to introduce Fit2SpeedDate, a revolutionary group fitness fusion class that combines circuit training with speed dating. TORONTO, ON, July 11, 2008
Fit2SpeedDate classes will be held regularly at selected Extreme Fitness clubs throughout the GTA, participants of the class connect with the opposite sex through friendly endurance competitions, strength challenges and partner assisted stretches.
The first Fit2SpeedDate class went down in hot heart pumping style last night, marking its official launch at Extreme Fitness' flagship Richmond Street location, in the heart of clubland. Click www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-njDHBy9UY to watch the video.
One by one, each of the 20 health-conscious daters arrived, curiously eyeing their prospective dates. The room was divided into 10 training stations where daters rotated in five minute intervals to workout and interact with each person. In addition to the activities, every station offered a witty ice breaker question to help spark conversation. At the end of each circuit, daters then filled out their match cards after deciding "YES or NO".
"Between the jump ropes, dumbbells and discussion about favourite movies, foods and sports, there was definitely a lot of heart-pumping chemistry in the first Fit2SpeedDate class," said Jacque Walters, instructor for Fit2SpeedDate and VP of Group Fitness for all thirteen Extreme Fitness locations. "There is no need to feel intimidated by the workout aspect. Although it is meant to be challenging, the circuit training is designed so that everyone can work out at their individual level."
"Combining FastLife's speed dating know-how with Extreme's top-notch fitness expertise, is a highly innovative training-turned-dating-circuit that really get hearts pumping," said FastLife CEO Justin Parfitt.
"I was a bit nervous at first, because I didn't know what to expect, but the instructor made everyone feel at ease and the exercises were a lot of fun," said Tina Crupi, a marketing professional who came to the class on the advise of a couple of girlfriends. "It was a great workout, and there were a few guys who I would really like to see again, I'm eager to see if the feelings are mutual."
Sean Bobbato, an art director at a downtown ad agency came to the class and shared a similar reaction to the class as Tina. "I was nervous at first, but after the warm-up everything was great. All the participants were open-minded and there to have fun. I said YES to five girls and am hoping for a positive response. I will definitely do this class again."
At the end of the class, everyone handed in their completed match card and headed off to the after-class mix and mingle around the corner at the new Jack Astors location on John Street . The results are then reviewed and matches calculated with FastLife's specialized speed dating software. The following day, FastLife will email each participant with the contact details of the people they mached with; it is then up to each individual to reach out and get the ball rolling.
"I found it very interesting the difference in character that you see when a person is in a group fitness setting as opposed to in a bar. During the workout, you tend to see a more natural personality. When the girls started to arrive at Jack Astors, all polished up, it was an entirely different dynamic," remarked Michael Lou a property manager, who signed up for the class because he wanted to meet new people in the gym.
The concept for Fit2SpeedDate came directly from watching the members of the club interact with each other on the gym floor. "They join Extreme not only to workout, but also to be social and meet new people. Fit2SpeedDate provided a low-pressure way of meeting new people with similar interests, " said Jim Solomon, CEO for Extreme Fitness. "Richmond Street is just the beginning, over the next few months, all 13 of our clubs will be offering the Fit2SpeedDate experience, with over 80,0000 members across the GTA, I think we may have just coined the latest trend in fitness and dating."
"Extreme members are remarkably similar to FastLife members," explains FastLife CEO Justin Parfitt, "in that they are both predominantly time-poor young professionals. Connecting the two groups only makes sense. Fit2SpeedDate is a tremendous opportunity to both expand our roster of specialty events that cater to particular lifestyles or interests."
Fit2SpeedDate classes cost $20 for members of Extreme Fitness and $40 for non-members. The next Fit2SpeedDate class, for the Richmond Street location, is scheduled for Thursday July 17th. Other Fit2SpeedDate classes are already scheduled at Extreme Fitness clubs across the GTA including Bloor Street, The Danforth, North York and The Delisle.
