- Public Relations for CEDA Nanette Collins, 617-437-1822 nanette@nvc.com A yearly award for outstanding technical contributions to the field of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) honoring the late Dr. Richard Newton was announced today during the 45th Design Automation Conference (DAC).
DAC runs today through Friday, June 13, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif. Details are available at
www.dac.com.
The "A. Richard Newton Technical Impact Award in Electronic Design Automation" will be sponsored by the IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation (CEDA) and the ACM Special Interest Group in Design Automation (ACM SIGDA).
The award is named for Richard Newton, a luminary in design automation academia and industry, and dean of engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, who died in 2007. It will be presented to an individual or individuals for their outstanding technical contributions to EDA, recognized over a significant period of time. The qualification will be based on a high-impact, seminal paper published by either ACM or IEEE nominees at least 10 years ago.
"Richard Newton embodied the idea of technical impact that this award seeks to recognize," says John Darringer, president of CEDA. "In honoring his great legacy, we intend to recognize individuals who have influenced technology, industry or education, or working electronic designers and engineers."
Adds Diana Marculescu, chair of ACM SIGDA: "Throughout his brilliant career, Richard Newton had a wonderful capacity for creative thinking that spawned others toward innovative thinking or new techniques that have been put into practice. We wish to keep that essence of him alive."
The first call for nominations will be announced in October. The award will be presented for the first time at the 46th DAC in San Francisco in 2009. For more details, visit:

About ACM Special Interest Group on Design Automation
ACM/SIGDA (Special Interest Group on Design Automation) has a tradition of over 40 years of supporting conferences and the EDA profession. SIGDA sponsors DAC, ICCAD, DATE, and ASP-DAC, plus approximately 15 smaller symposia and workshops, while providing a broad array of additional resources to students, professors and industry members, and to the EDA profession in general via technical and educational activities, travel grants, and publications. SIGDA's parent organization, ACM, provides its members access to a variety of ACM products and resources, including discounts on conferences, subscriptions to ACM journals and magazines, and the ACM Digital Library, an invaluable IT resource. For further information on SIGDA's programs and resources, see

About the IEEE Council on EDA
The Council on Electronic Design Automation is IEEE's focal point for multiple EDA disciplines. Its goal is to bring increased value to IEEE members and the EDA community as a whole by coordinating EDA activities, enabling new initiatives, fostering interdisciplinary research and recruiting young talent to EDA. It also will increase visibility for IEEE-sponsored EDA events such as the Design Automation Conference (DAC) and International Conference on Computer Aided Design (ICCAD) and its technical publications. Its charter spans theory, implementation and use of computer aided design (CAD) tools to design integrated electronic circuits and systems. Its website is located at:
