Each season, schools of tuna and sardines swim through here. In Italy, they are known
as "pesce azzurro" (blue fish), such good for health that one should eat it regularly.
San Vincenzo turned this into the "feast of the Palamita", which attracts each year the finest palates in the country.
During the long weekend, all the restaurants of the area offer dishes featuring this famous fish. For example, Poggio ai Santi, on a hill overlooking an unique panorama, has launched the fair on Saturday with a candlelit dinner. Francesca Vierucci, director of Poggio ai Santi, says that such initiatives, that involve the whole region, bring people nearer to less well known sides of Tuscany: the sea, the protection of nature, wellness and exceptional food.
Fulvio Pierangelini, the multiple award winning chef of the "Gambero Rosso", located right on the port of San Vincenzo, is the director of the initiative.
This year he has asked his friend and neighbour Oliviero Toscani to share a very original initiative, which also allows one to broadcast to the world some positive news instead of the usual wars and catastrophes. They will put their talents together and invite eighty retired housewives, eighty women who devoted their lives to cooking for their husbands and children here in San Vincenzo.
On the occasion of this friendly meal, Oliviero Toscani will take portraits of each of the participants.
