PERKINS+WILL NAMED AS A WINNER OF THE 5TH ANNUAL CORENET GLOBAL, AIA AND IIDA SUSTAINABILITY LEADERSHIP AWARD FOR SUSTAINABLE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
Perkins+Will, a global integrated design firm, was named among the winners of the 2008 Sustainability Leadership Award for Design and Development, announced yesterday at the CoreNet Global Summit in San Diego. Winning the category "For Achievement in Development in For-Profit Organizations", Perkins+Will was recognized for its Sustainable Design Initiative (SDI) Strategic Plan and Green Operations Plan. These plans, implemented throughout the firm's 1,300-person staff, outline measurable practical and operational strategies that have made Perkins+Will a thought leader in sustainable design.
"Sustainable design is in the DNA of our corporate culture," said Phil Harrison, Perkins+Will CEO. "As a global design leader, we believe that it is our responsibility to make sustainability more than just a mission statement, but inherent to how we work and live. We are truly honored to be named among our peers as a leader in sustainable design and development."
Perkins+Will's SDI and Green Operations Plan are used as guides to ensure that facilities and day-to-day operations continue to be environmentally responsible. Between the two plans, transportation, water use, energy use, air quality, educational training, research, leadership projects, administration and marketing serve as specific target areas of concentration. All of Perkins+Will's offices incorporate sustainable design features, such as efficient HVAC systems, materials sourced regionally, open design studios, low-flow fixtures, and daylight and occupancy sensors. The company's environmental conscience also extends to its membership of the U.S. Green Building Council.
In 2007, Perkins+Will became the first multi-office company to commit to the 2030 Challenge, pledging that all of the firm's projects be designed for carbon neutrality by the year 2030. With over 90 percent of management staff and 77 percent of all professional staff LEED(R) accredited, Perkins+Will has more than 750 LEED(R) Accredited Professionals--more than any other firm in the world. The firm currently has 23 LEED(R) certified projects and 99 LEED(R) registered.
