Factonomy, a leading enabler of web-based business solutions, announced today that it designed and created the advanced web-based carbon calculator used by Standard Chartered for The Greatest Race on Earth (GROE).
Standard Chartered encouraged people to select and undertake up to eight environmental pledges to coincide with the unique marathon series, one of which was measuring their carbon footprint using the Factonomy designed online carbon calculator.
The brief for Factonomy was to build a powerful carbon calculator which could be used to quantify the carbon footprint of households in over 50 countries that make up the Standard Chartered network.
By answering a short series of questions, Standard Chartered wanted users to see the amount of CO2 their current lifestyle emitted, to uncover the impact they were having on the environment and to get advice on how to reduce their overall CO2 emissions. Working closely with the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Management, Factonomy delivered a sophisticated carbon calculator in just six weeks, which uniquely allowed people to identify their personal carbon footprint from their household and travel activities, by responding to questions designed to be relevant to circumstances in their home country.
Users were offered a choice of a quick calculation or, if they had their household bills to hand, a more detailed analysis of their carbon footprint could be provided.
'The carbon calculator was created using the Factonomy Framework, which we are currently licensing to companies who want to reduce the time and cost it takes to develop applications,' said CEO of Factonomy, Geoff Kell. 'Because it is based on declarative XML, it runs in a familiar web based environment, dramatically increasing productivity and user adoption,' he said.
