Middle East is Developing a Proactive Safety Culture

2013-04-09 12:47:56 - Fire safety technology is a consideration which needs to be of high priority when looking at new infrastructure developments and construction refurbishments across sectors. The Middle East region is preparing to develop a proactive safety culture at the 4th Annual Middle East Fire Safe Forum on the 23 - 25 September in Dubai.

A casual attitude toward safety is CASUALTY and every so often the unexpected happens. Fire safety, emergency preparedness and management is a crucial part of all public and private sector organisations because the safety of staff and visitors is at stake. A fire must be contained quickly to reduce property damage and disruption to services. Once a fire starts, it

can be difficult to contain without the appropriate equipment and training. Dubai alone saw major fire outbreaks in high rises last November. With a recent spate of fires in the region including the breakout at dhow inferno that left Dubai in black smoke, fire safe is a concern to residents and also industry sectors. Costs due to losses from fire sums up in the tens of billions globally, and have been roughly estimated as approximately 1 per cent of global GDP per annum. Fire safety technology is a consideration which needs to be of high priority when looking at new infrastructure developments and construction refurbishments across sectors.

Early January 2013, a report carried out in a leading newspaper (Khaleej Times) stated that, Major General Rashid Thani Al Matrooshi, Acting Commander General of The Department of Civil Defence started implementing electronic inspections to make fire-safety rules stringent in Dubai. With the current developments with fire safety and inspection in the region, the Civil Defence Department continues its support at the 4th Annual Middle East Fire Safe Forum on the 23 - 25 September in Dubai. The summit will explore the dynamics of fire safety and help divulge best practices on how things can be implemented towards ensuring a safe and secure work and residential environment. Representation from the London Fire Brigade, International Codes Council, Society of Fire Protection Engineers and COWI are confirmed to present at the Middle East FireSafe Dubai summit. Over the three days keynote address, thought provoking case studies, networking sessions and interactive workshops will unravel knowledge and expertise on developing a proactive safety culture.

Previous edition of the summit in 2012, the 3rd Annual Middle East Fire Safe, saw 225 visitors over 3 days making it one of the largest fire safety event in the Middle East region. The summit also received support from leading industry associations like SFPE, FCIA and GFPA. It is a cross industry summit that looks into understanding the regional and international fire codes and understanding fire dynamics to avoid a system design failure. Municipal and regulatory authorities across the region are insisting on higher standards of fire safety in buildings, both of an active and passive nature. MENA civil defence authorities plan to integrate new fire safety standards and latest technology. This has intensified the acquisition of more reliable equipment, expertise and best practices among Arab states to further build up local fire fighting capabilities. Global business research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan affirms that the call to action is expected to drive the Middle East’s fire safety market into a USD 1.12 billion industry by 2013.
