Three, two, one... BOOOM! The time has come for a new super heroine to take the UK music by storm. Fast becoming a cult hit down under, and awarded top five Best Australian Albums of 2012 by the Australian Music Prize, this femme fatale is destined to enchant audiences. She goes by the name Abbe May and with a tinge
of Portishead's trip hop undertones and PJ Harvey's raw angst, she isn't afraid to bring nocturnal and ballsy music into the cold light of day. No compromises, no apologies, no excuses...
Equipped in a “Karmageddon” instant hit machine gun fully loaded and ready to attack human ears, and with only a handful of b-side dynamite spelling out “T.R.O.U.B.L.E” Abbe May explodes onto the UK music scene and she means business.
“Karmageddon” is a song that hails sorrow and separation, a soundtrack for the end of the world, her world.... but it is more than that. The lyric is so heavy laden with melancholy and pain that in one breath you feel the deep wrenching ache of nostalgia and in the next breath you are carried forth into the spirit of our time. It's an old song written for the new generation. With “Karmageddon”, Abbe May truly stands as the herald of a new dawn in contemporary music.
The b-side called "T.R.O.U.B.L.E" is just as worthy of everyone’s attention. It is a result of a non-stop experimental recording with just a mellotron and a drum machine. In the very first few seconds of the song an eerie female voice spells out “T.R.O.U.B.L.E” followed by a mid tempo electro beat led by an enchanting, dipped in reverb and daunting falsetto. Instantly it sounds like no less than a timeless 80’s classic, with an edgy Abbe May-de twisted cherry on top. The whole track is filled with haunting melodic undertones and vocal range worthy only of Kate Bush. The song itself is a true experience from start to finish.
The end might be near and there might be trouble around the corner, but I no longer mind or fear them. On the contrary, I welcome them with open arms, eyes and ears to the sound of Abbe May… She calls, she promises, she delivers. She is the musical superlative!
