Xarelto® (Rivaroxaban) is
a blood thinner medication prescribed to patients with atrial fibrillation, the most common form of cardiac arrhythmia. This condition affects an estimated 3 million Americans and 15% of elderly Americans over the age of 80. In these patients, there is a significant increased risk for developing a blood clot in the heart due to blood pooling in a storage chamber of the heart. This clotted blood can travel to the brain and block an artery supplying blood to the brain, causing a stroke.
The FDA recently approved Xarelto® as a blood thinner medication to prevent blood clots, but within the first 3 months, over 356 adverse health effects were reported. The most common of these adverse health effects were hemorrhaging or heavy internal bleeding. According to the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices, Xarelto® is as risky as Pradaxa® because both thrombin inhibitors lack a reversal agent to stop potentially fatal bleeding events. (

In 2011, the FDA reported the highest amount of prescription medication deaths last year were due to Pradaxa®. This popular blood thinner allegedly caused severe blood thinner injuries for nearly 4,000 people and over 500 deaths. Many doctors have expressed fears that because of the similarities between Pradaxa® and Xarelto®, patients are at severe risk for potentially fatal bleeding and severe blood thinner injury. (
