Wiresoft Thought Leadership Speaker Series: Small to Mid-Sized Businesses (SMBs) Operate under Constant Attack From Spam and Viruses. How Can SMBs Protect Themselves?
2009-11-10 21:26:01 -
At the ITEC Indianapolis Conference and Expo yesterday, Wiresoft, a leading provider of network security and disaster recovery products, shared its insights on cyber attacks that menace all businesses and organizations, and the steps that SMBs in particular must take to stop network intrusion in its tracks.
Speaking on, “Network Security – Be Scared, Be Smart, Be Compliant,” Wiresoft president Tom
Schram presented a stark picture on the state of network security.
- This year in the U.S. alone, spam will cost $42 billion
- Computers in the U.S. generate 17.5 percent of all spam
- A recent FBI survey revealed that 52% of respondents discovered unauthorized access to their systems, and 47% had experienced laptop theft
- In 2008, the number of malicious e-mails exploded five-fold
- In the same period, Cybercrime tripled
- 32% of North American SMBs have been hit by Cybercrime multiple times
Turning to disaster recovery, Schram noted that.
- 6% of all PCs will suffer at least one episode of data loss per year
- 20% of laptops will suffer hardware-related data loss in their first three years of use
According to Schram, “SMBs, lacking the financial resources of larger enterprises, to date have had to rely on a cobbled-together array of hardware devices for protection from cyber attacks. Such defense mechanisms are no more effective than the little Dutch boy who stuck his finger in the dike. When it comes to spam and viruses, SMBs are already under water.”
Schram’s appearance at ITEC coincided with this week’s launch of the Wiresoft Firegate network security platform with disaster recovery.
Schram discussed how recent advances in Unified Threat Management (UTM) with the FreeBSD operating platform used by Firegate give SMBs a new option: enterprise-level network protection at an affordable price.
