New AirMagnet Planner Provides First-of-a-Kind Capabilities for 802.11n WLAN Deployments

2009-11-10 14:28:08 -

AirMagnet Inc., a Fluke Networks company, today announced AirMagnet Planner for 802.11n. The solution guides network professionals through the critical stages of 802.11n Wi-Fi network design, including migration from existing legacy networks, prediction of WLAN performance and post-deployment validation, offering customers first-of-a-kind functionality for a WLAN planning solution.

Fundamental changes in the legacy RF systems and many new sub-technologies such as

MIMO, beam forming and others have made an 802.11n network considerably more complex and challenging to deploy than its legacy network counterpart. In addition, all hardware vendors are implementing 802.11n differently, causing interoperability issues to arise that can significantly impact legacy devices. With true 802.11n network performance being defined by data rates and throughput – which can be hard to attain, manage and measure – it is vital that network professionals have advanced planning applications that allow for effective WLAN design and modeling.

“AirMagnet has taken the leadership role in 802.11n deployment and management solutions, offering the industry’s only complete mobile toolset for 11n, which includes AirMagnet WiFi Analyzer and AirMagnet Survey,” said Chris Roeckl, vice president of marketing at AirMagnet.

“Whether an organization is rolling out a new 11n deployment or transitioning an existing legacy network, the elements for success remain the same: migration, prediction and validation. AirMagnet provides the only solution today that covers all of these aspects and can ensure the successful design of a high-performance WLAN for business-critical applications.”

Migrate

Along with modeling new 802.11n networks, AirMagnet Planner takes the guesswork out of WLAN design and installation, while clearly defining a migration strategy to 802.11n. It offers automated migration guidance for existing legacy networks including phased introduction of 802.11n devices or one-for-one replacements of legacy infrastructure equipment with new 802.11n devices. Built-in intelligence enables users to detect user flaws made in designing networks where new 802.11n and legacy devices co-exist.

Predict

AirMagnet Planner makes it easy to simulate WLAN performance end-results before a physical AP rollout, and delivers unique WLAN throughput estimations for every location. The solution models each deployment for maximum performance and provides users with new 802.11n specific coverage maps, including Operating mode, Channel width and Maximum Transmit MCS rate. Users can model leading infrastructure vendor APs (such as Cisco, Aruba, Motorola, Meru Networks and more), optimize the AP count, layout and configurations, and accurately predict throughput for true performance prior to migration. Furthermore, AirMagnet Planner creates a bill-of-materials report for equipment purchase to help budget the wireless deployment project before an actual rollout.

Validate

The new release of AirMagnet Planner is seamlessly integrated into AirMagnet Survey PRO, allowing users to validate results from the prediction model design versus “real-world” results from post-deployment active surveys. AirMagnet Survey PRO’s unique built-in capability of measuring WLAN performance takes into account the RF and wireless network conditions at every location on the floor, allowing users to validate “true” bi-directional performance for the network. With this version, users can take advantage of new support for 802.11a/b/g/n USB wireless adapters for performing “real-world” site surveys using Survey PRO. Similar USB support is also available in the new version of the industry’s “de-facto” troubleshooting and analysis tool, AirMagnet WiFi Analyzer.

“Pre-deployment or migration planning for 11n is a critical step in the wireless design process. With more organizations relying on the wireless network for critical business applications, poor performance or failures around security can be disastrous,” said Keith Parsons, a widely regarded WLAN industry expert and consultant. “AirMagnet Planner for 11n offers powerful features that simplify this process and ensure the successful deployment of a wireless network. When combined with WiFi Analyzer and Survey, it provides the industry’s most comprehensive mobile toolset for 11n.”

Pricing and Availability

AirMagnet Planner is available now as a standalone application at a list price of $2,000, or built into AirMagnet Survey PRO for new customers (list price of $3,995). AirMagnet Survey Express users can add Planner to their software at a list price of $1,000.
