Ireland seeks release of Darfur aid workers

2009-07-04 14:31:04 -

DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) - Ireland says its ambassador in Cairo is on his way to Khartoum to try help free two aid workers kidnapped in Darfur.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said Saturday the envoy was traveling to Sudan «as a matter of urgency» to seek the release of 32-year-old Irishwoman Sharon Commins and her Ugandan colleague, Hilda Kawuki. Ireland does not have an embassy in Sudan.
The women worked in Darfur for GOAL, an Irish humanitarian aid group. The international peacekeeping mission in the troubled desert region said they were abducted by gunmen in the Kutum area of north Darfur.
It is the third kidnapping of foreign humanitarian workers since March.
