Turkey to produce 6 German-designed submarines

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Turkey has signed a deal with German companies to build six high-tech submarines at a Turkish shipyard.
The state-run Defense Industry Undersecretariat says the deal to build Type 214 submarines with air-independent propulsion systems that enable them to remain submerged for weeks was signed Thursday.
It says the German joint venture is composed of German shipyard Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH and Marine Force International.
The total value of the deal was not released but estimates say it hovers around $3.5 billion (ยค2.5 billion).
