South Africa's Zuma opens summit on Madagascar

2009-06-20 13:42:01 -

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - South African President Jacob Zuma is urging Madagascar's rival politicians to be part of the solution to the Indian Ocean island's crisis.
Zuma was speaking Saturday as chair of an emergency regional summit on Madagascar, whose president was toppled by a military-backed rival in March.
Earlier this week, mediators indefinitely suspended efforts to guide the rivals toward a solution, saying both sides were blocking progress.
Zuma says «inclusive political dialogue» is crucial.
Zuma chairs the 15-member Southern African Development Community, which suspended Madagascar because of the March takeover. The island's toppled President Marc Ravalomanana participated in informal talks leading to Saturday's SADC summit.
