Barak Obama Makes History – Oprah Winfrey Dethroned
2009-06-18 06:27:07 -
While President Barak Obama makes history, Angelina Jolie dethrones Oprah Winfrey on the fame and fortune list. President Obama was listed as number 49 on the list, which ranks celebrities based on their earnings and the attention the media have been giving them. Obama made $2.5 million last year from his two best-selling fiction books, Dream From My Father and The Audacity of Hope, (for young adult readers). Obama is already under contract to write a non-fiction book once he eventually leaves the White House. Clinton got $15 million for his book ‘My Life’.
Speaking from Forbes Magazine, Lacey Rose says “There is a very real interest in President Obama, both as a president, a family man and a celebrity".
Former President, Bill Clinton, made the Forbes list in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2007, but only after he had left the White House in 2001.
This year all four top positions on the Forbes Fortune List, are held by women for the first time. Angelina Jolie, superstar actor and humanitarian advocate, has dethroned talk show host Oprah Winfrey, after leaping from third position in 2008. Winfrey earned ten times more income than Jolie, but Angelina is the most searched for celebrity on the Internet. She has also been seen on the cover of 35 magazines, been the centre of an endless sea of media hype and has starred in several blockbuster movies.
Singers Madonna and Beyonce Knowles followed Jolie and Winfrey on the list. Golfer Tiger Woods took out the No. 5 position, chased by Bruce Springsteen, director Steven Spielberg and actor Brad Pitt in positions numbers 6, 7 and 8. David Letterman has come in at 14th place while Sarah Palin is nowhere to be found. Appearing at No. 25 is Simon Cowell, owner of Britain’s Got Talent.
The creators of Forbes Celebrity 100 Power List analyze the earnings, as well as the media sizzle produced, to decide which personalities have both fame and fortune. The list creators look at celebrities from TV, the movie world, to athletes, models, politics, authors and musicians.
The earning power of the Celebrity 100 list remained remarkably settled, in spite of the world financial crisis. The combined earnings of the group totaled $4.1 billion, which has a slight edge on last year’s $4 billion. The main reason for this is because many of the movie stars are locked into long-term endorsement and performance contracts. The economical downturn may do some catch-up with the celebrities next year.
