MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) - Brazil beat Uruguay 4-0 on Saturday to move closer to a place in next year's World Cup in South Africa. Daniel Alves, Juan, Luis Fabiano and Kaka scored for the five-time World Cup champions.
Alves, starting in place of injured defender Maicon, made it 1-0 lead in the 12th minute on a
30-meter (yard), speculative shot that bounced past goalkeeper Sebastian Viera.
Juan made it 2-0 in the 36th and Fabiano added another in the 52nd. Kaka converted a penalty in the 75th.
The victory was Brazil's first in 33 years in a qualifying match in Montevideo. Instead of prospering at home, Uruguay _ the highest scoring team in South American gualifying going into this weekend _ produced almost nothing on offense.
Juan's goal came on a header off a pass from Robinho. Fabiano scored on a hard, sharp-angled shot and Kaka got his on a penalty after a foul from Diego Godin.
«I'm happy with the play, I got a goal,» Juan said. «It was a play we've trained a lot on.
Both teams finished a player short. Fabiano was sent off in the 65th on his second yellow card, and Maximiliano Pereira went off in the 86th on a straight red card.
«Brazil took advantage of its opportunities,» Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said. «On top of that, they defended very well.
Brazil is the only country to have played in every World Cup, and the victory in the South American qualifier all but guarantees another appearance. The loss leaves Uruguay on the cusp.
