France beats Turkey 1-0 in friendly

2009-06-05 23:25:03 -

LYON, France (AP) - France striker Karim Benzema scored a penalty Friday to give his team a 1-0 win over 10-man Turkey in a friendly that was later stopped briefly after Turkish fans threw objects on to the field.
Benzema scored in the 39th minute after Nicolas Anelka was fouled by defender Ibrahim Uzulmez, who was sent off for the foul.
Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel almost kept out Benzema's penalty and then made several saves to keep the score down.
Referee Manuel Grafe stopped the match briefly in the 78th after Turkey's fans threw flares and other objects on to the field. Play resumed several minutes later after Turkey striker Tuncay Sanli and coach Fatih Terim had pleaded with the fans for calm.
Demirel twice denied Franck Ribery in quick succession in the second half and kept out Yoann Gourcuff's dipping free kick. But he was saved by his post in the 88th after Sidney Govou had burst through.
France substitute Andre-Pierre Gignac missed two more chances late on, while teammate Jean-Alain Boumsong had a header cleared off the line.
