ANN ARBOR, MI -- (Marketwire) -- 05/20/09 -- The Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Michigan today announced that it is hosting the third annual Sustainable Energy Fellowship, a week-long series of classroom learning, and field visits to companies like Ford Motor Company, United Solar Ovonics, Holcim and DTE Energy, all centered on advancing sustainable energy development and delivery. The fellowship session will take place May 31-June 5, 2009, at The Erb Institute on the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
The Sustainable Energy Fellowship program is gaining momentum as students, scholars and businesspeople are fostering explosive growth in the energy sector, from renewables to smart grid to a national grid. For student-participants, this is an exciting opportunity to better understand the alternative energy landscape, at a time when interest in this sector has never been higher.
A partnership program between The University of Michigan, Arizona State University, Duke, Cornell, and MIT, as well as the Shell Corporation and Ford Motor Company, the Sustainable Energy Fellowship brings together 40 undergraduate and master's students from universities across the U.S. to help address these challenges. They will learn about, debate and apply the latest thinking on sustainable energy through lectures and discussions led by some of the world's most prominent scholars and businesspeople in the field of sustainable energy.
"Academic research is often seen as theoretical, but when it comes to sustainability issues, the practical implications of our scholarship are enormous, especially in regions like Michigan, whose economy has deep roots in fossil fuels," said Erb Institute Associate Director and Holcim (U.S.) Professor of Sustainable Enterprise Andrew J. Hoffman. "The Sustainable Energy Fellowship program aims to bring together both great thinkers and smart businesspeople to generate dialogue and ideas for solving the very real challenge of sustainable energy creation, production and consumption, now and in the future."
The Erb Institute, which celebrates its 15th anniversary year in 2009, awards a dual MBA/MS degree from the Ross School of Business and the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan, giving students unique expertise in both the science and the business of sustainability.
