2014-04-10 09:49:43 - Of Dust and Grass is the latest novel by Debabrata Nath. It is the story of three women hailing from Bengal from three different generations
Debabrata Nath in his latest novel presents the story of Debjani and her life, the life she lived all this while and the life she has heard about so far from everyone around. The novel tells the story of seventy years. It begins with Debjani’s grandma who resided in a remote village- Debipur that was around 70 kms away from Kolkata. Her grandmother, Binodini’s story doesn't end with her life but her granddaughter Debjani gets to inherit that.
Debjani, following her marriage shifts to the industrial town of Hindmotor, in the Hoogly District of Bengal and the story follows her there. It shifts to Chnisurah where her mother-in-law Sabita lives. This is the story of three women, Binodini, Debjani and
Sabita, coming from three generations. This is the story of the Bengali middle class, the joint family system that prevailed once and the nuclear units that have tragically cropped out of that. It is the story of grand leaps moving from scarcity to moderate affluence, a strange tale of rural Bengal and its shift from the colonial past to post-colonial realities.
The novel has its climax in Kolkata the city which was probably the labour-theatre of the Bengali Middle-Class and which again in its Globalised Avatar paved the way of its disintegration. Debjani witnessed that slow disintegration of the grand dreams, but denied to be a part of it and in one obsolete, deserted attic of the big city she dreams of starting a new life – not the Middle-Class one, not a kind of life hitherto conceived or possibly lived…but a life that sounds cinema-like, yet very much within the reach of us –the ordinary humanity. Debjani writes that story but at the cost of long forty-two years… Debjani Chakraborty aka Debjani Moitra is now past her prime and writes the story she lived, heard and dreamt…the story of dust and grass.
This novel tells the story of three women, the story of Bengali middle class, a story of evolution and survival. The book is ideal for readers of all generations and has bit of association with our lives. There is something or the other that the readers will find common with the situations depicted here. Read it on to find an association, flip the pages to form a binding.
