Milagros Branca’s new book – “Up on the Hill” is creating a widespread expectation amongst readers. The novel tells of Giovanni Monteverdi, a 50 year old Italian Literature professor at University of California Berkeley, who returns home to Tuscany. The man has lost his reason to live and is immersed himself in his work. As middle-age is a tough trial, described very beautifully by the author, the man plans to sell his family villa after his sister’s death. Given a vivid description of the Italian countryside, the reader will instantly fall in love with the story. The description of the characters and the setting seem to be jump off the page and literally coming alive for reader.
The plot begins
when the middle-aged man meets the caretaker of the villa, who has got an odd name to start with. Through her, he gets an insight into the world in which his sister was living and through her he finds out about his sister's psychic abilities. His journey develops into a beautiful romance. The man finds a new reason to live, he finds Love. He undergoes a change which is highlighted further by a magical journey which takes place at the villa.
The character of the housekeeper is also very beautifully described as illiterate, yet she still has plenty to teach and wants to inject new meaning into the professor’s life. Her illiteracy doesn't keep her from understanding the deep meaning of life and from this extraordinary character the reader too is taken on a journey into insight and wisdom.
