Crossing the Rubicon - Corporate Arranged Marriages, latest novel by Sharath Babu brings alive the bitter realities of today’s MNCs and IT management mixed with outsourcing.
Sharath Babu was born and raised in Bangalore, India until he completed his graduation in electrical engineering and later migrated to the US to get a master's degree in computer science from California State University, Sacramento. He has spent the last 22 years working on IT for global companies playing both technical and leadership roles, with two entrepreneurial ventures to his credit. He lives in Bangalore with his wife and kids who are all US citizens. He is involved in outsourcing consulting work, apart from playing golf and completing this first book of his, the content of which is very close to his heart
Bob Tyler a 23 year veteran of the IT industry has seen it all. Having graduated from
UC Davis, California with a BS and MS in computer science, joins a modest sized chip manufacturing industry in an environment where everyone was first name basis with visionary leaders and employee friendly managers. Over the next two decades the organization grows into a global multinational company with a presence all over the world. The advent of globalization and outsourcing reduced the once visionary leaders and managers to self preserving and turf seeking cabals chasing greener pastures for cheaper labor. Bob Tyler is reminded of episodes of Takeshi's castle where he sees the management as the monsters who are busy taking their competition and employees down as they attempt to overcome the obstacles. Employees have been reduced to mere nameless faceless usernames across 10000 miles, and dissatisfied customers are statistics for meaningless dashboards, metrics, and standards created purely for feel good purposes.
A first time writer, the author has impressively brought in light the bitter aspects of today’s corporate. Globalization has gifted the society many boons but has equally been devastated by its negative impacts. Employees are no more treated as living beings but rather as entities responsible for the assigned tasks and customers as mere subject of calculation and analysis of organizations policies. Profit making has emerged as the only goal of an organization and they want to accomplish them at any cost. The book is definitely interesting and is must read for youth and employees across varied industries. Though focused on life in MNCs and IT Management, every employee will be able to associate themselves with the book in some way or the other.
