Kidapawan City Mayor Rodolfo Gantuangco (pictured) admitted in public that he allowed the meeting between the lawyer of New Zealand national David William Wakefield and his alleged victims and their guardians.
Gantuangco, in an interview over Catholic-run radio station DXND, said there was a request from his friend, who happens to be Wakefield’s lawyer in the Philippines, to facilitate such meeting.
He also said the meeting took place in his own resort at Barangay Sikitan, this city, on Saturday, a day before Wakefield was released
from detention in Davao City.
The mayor said he was privy the meeting was about the amicable settlement of the case.
“Yes, I know that Wakefield’s lawyer came here to convince the victims and the guardians to settle the case amicably,” he said during the radio interview.
Gantuangco denied reports there were pressures from the government of the New Zealand to release their national who was locked in Davao City jail after complaints of child trafficking, statutory rape, and child abuse were filed against him by two minors from Kidapawan City.
The mayor was told that Wakefield was released from detention due to some technicalities, especially on the manner of the arrest.
David Wakefield holds dual New Zealand and British citizenship and is known to have used both passports to travel around Asia and Africa.
Wakefield was arrested in a Davao hotel on child rape charges and then mysteriously released from a non-balilable offense.
