The Peter Pupping Band, headed by lead guitarist Peter Pupping, has announced the release of its fourth album and kick-off concert.

The album, entitled Café Pacifico, features Pupping playing lead guitar, along with local performers William Wilson on guitar, Jeff Basile on double bass, Kevin Koch on drums Roy Gonzales and Allan Phillips on keyboards.

Five of the songs are original compositions, including Luna Llena, composed by Allan Phillips, which was used as a wake-up song for astronauts on the space shuttle during its final mission. The remaining arrangements are ones that showcase the band’s Latin jazz style.

“This album makes you want to relax, dance, reflect on the journeys of our lives, and celebrate the good times,”

Pupping said. “It’s the ultimate feel-good album containing soothing sounds, exciting rhythms, and the work of very talented local musicians.”

The album’s styles include Nuevo Flamenco, Cuban, West African, Nuevo Tango, Bossa Nova, Samba and Latin Smooth Jazz.

About the Peter Pupping Band

After performing for 15 years as a solo guitarist, Pupping scheduled a performance with long-time student William Wilson in 1996. Theirs was supposed to be a one-time performance of classical, Spanish and Flamenco guitar music. Word of the performance spread and a friend volunteered to play percussion. After an overwhelming response, the duo expanded to a quartet.

The group added a permanent bass player and percussionist, and then released its first album Samba Nights, followed two years later by Embarcadero. The group added Phillips bringing it to a full six piece band, which has performed all over California, including the opening concert at the Coors Amphitheatre for Huey Lewis. The band released Sea Journey in 2008, which was nominated for best world music at the San Diego Music Awards. Café Pacifico is its most recent release.
