ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Giorgos Karagounis scored twice Sunday to give Panathinaikos a 3-1 victory over visiting Aris in Greek league playoffs for berths in next season's European competition.
The win, combined with AEK's 2-2 draw at Panionios on Sunday, earned Panathinaikos a spot in the second qualifying round of the Champions League, with a
game to spare.
Dame Ndoye also scored for Panathinaikos, while Gentil Thiago accounted for Aris' consolation goal.
AEK hosts Panathinaikos and Panionios travels to Aris on Wednesday in the last of the six-game Greek league playoffs.
AEK already has qualified for the UEFA Cup. Aris, a finalist in next week's Greek Cup final against league champion Olympiakos, also has advanced to the UEFA Cup, while Panionios will play in the Intertoto Cup.
Panathinaikos' game was the last played at the 86-year-old Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium in central Athens. The Athens club will return to the Olympic stadium next season until its new 40,000-seat stadium is ready in about a year and a half.
Karagounis put Panathinaikos ahead in the 56th off a through ball from Ndoye. The Senegal striker made it 2-0 in the 62nd, one minute before Karagounis stretched it to 3-0. Thiago narrowed the difference in the 73rd.
Panionios' Manolis Skoufalis scored a last-minute goal to salvage a 2-2 draw against AEK.
Dario Fernandez had put Panionios ahead before Nikos Lymberopoulos and Rivaldo made it 2-1 for AEK.
