SUPRApak™ filters, Pall Corporation’s (NYSE:PLL) new alternative to conventional sheet filters, provide distilleries with production benefits at lower cost. The technology minimizes product losses while meeting the highest standards for purity and clarity.

Over 20 billion liters of distilled spirits are produced around the world each year. From chill filtration in brown spirits, to activated carbon treatment in white spirits, to

final filtration in low alcohol beverages, virtually all spirits require some form of filtration or separation.

“To produce visually clear and bright spirits, contaminants must be removed while quality enhancing components are maintained. The balance of purity, quality and clarity is essential,” said Nicole Madrid, global marketing manager for wine and spirits at Pall. “With SUPRApak filters, distillers can achieve this balance as they increase yield and minimize labor and downtime, thereby reducing overall operating costs.”

Distilleries have traditionally used “plate and frame” sheet filters to clarify spirits. These filters are open to the air and can potentially expose the product to contamination. In contrast, SUPRApak filters utilize fully enclosed housings. As a result, they eliminate filter sheet disadvantages such as product losses, hygiene concerns and frequent maintenance. Further, with their compact, high surface area construction, SUPRApak modules reduce the production equipment footprint and are easy to set up and change out.

Finally, SUPRApak SH-grade filters release low levels of calcium and magnesium and negligible levels of iron and copper, preventing precipitation in alcohol or the final product. This characteristic makes them ideal for spirits filtration.

Earlier this year, in a typical example, a distillery in Europe converted two production lines from a plate and frame filter process to a four-module SUPRApak process. In addition to improved product quality and easier handling, the customer realizes savings of more than 20 percent.
