2013-08-15 16:12:01 - As a relevant factor for performance, body weight is an important topic in endurance sport. At the end of September, the marathon season’s second half is heralded by popular events, such as the Berlin Marathon. Then, it will be of essential importance for runners to start in a top condition. With the goal of a successful and healthy running experience, athletes pay special attention to reaching optimum body weight for competitions. But in order to keep the body strong for a good performance, runners have to make sure that weight loss is achieved by reducing body fat percentage and not by losing muscle mass.
Conscious eating for a healthy weight management
Runners focus on reducing their body fat percentage in order to be able to perform successfully during a competition. In a study at the Oregon State University in the US, the professor of nutrition, Melinda Manore, examined the right diet for athletes who want to achieve a healthy weight. According to her, many athletes try to restrict calorie intake too much in a way that is unhealthy and unsustainable. In order to maintain muscle mass while losing weight, Manore recommends a diet rich in fibre and water, but low in fat. This means that an athlete’s menu should mainly include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish and low-fat dairy products. This is not
only supposed to provide the necessary energy for training, but also to stabilise muscle mass while reducing body fat percentage.
Body composition monitor for more support
In order to achieve optimum body weight as well as the best individually-possible performance in competitions, it is necessary to obtain a well-funded understanding of the own body and its condition and composition. Omron’s body composition monitor BF214 provides essential information for reaching a healthy weight. The slim digital scale not only measures body weight, but also divides the body mass in different components. Thereby, the BF214 accurately calculates the user’s body mass index, body fat percentage and skeletal muscles. With these information, the user can reliably monitor how the own body reacts to changes in personal eating or training habits. Used regularly, the clinically validated monitor calculates and records how the body changes over time, helping to strategize an exercise plan in terms of the personal need to lose fat, build muscle or both.
