Onassis Foundation greatly contributing the Greek Society and Culture

Onassis Foundation has proved to be a leading institution that aims to greatly support the advancement of the Greek society and civilization granting scholarships or organizing highly important lectures and events.

In December 1975, in Athens, the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation ( open its doors to the world. After Aristotle Onassis’ last will, the Foundation’s headquarters are located in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, spreading its one of a kind multifarious contribution. The Foundation is named after Aristotle Onassis’ wish to honour the memory of his son. The Foundation’s interests expand from culture and education to the environment, health and social solidarity, among others, whereas it is strongly connected to Greece and Greek culture. It is fully funded by the homonymous business foundation also based in Vaduz, Liechtenstein. The Business Foundation projects are focused on shipping, whereas the ones of Public Benefit Foundation are dedicated as described above, having founded the

Onassis Cultural Centre in Athens.

Onassis Foundation has developed an enormous scholarships network, after Aristotle Onassis’ enduring devotion on education. Wishing to contribute to the Greek society, the Foundation grants 130 scholarships to Greeks every year from 1978, for studying either in Greece or abroad, in any field of study. Moreover, the Foundation, paying serious attention to all fields of art, grants Greek scholarships to artists of any background, as well as to its employees’ children. The scholars are selected by the Board of Directors being advised by a strictly chosen circle of academicians. Until now, the Foundation has awarded 5,279 grants or almost 74 million US dollars.

In 1995, the Foundation decided to contribute more to the Greek society and to promote Greek overall civilisation to the rest of the world. Thus, it developed a new scholarships program referring to foreigners wishing to make their research in Greece. Having awarded 778 scholarships so far, the Foundation has granted to members of national academies, university professors of all levels, PhD holders, post-doctorate researchers, post-graduate students and doctoral candidates, artists, and teachers of Greek language, literature, history and culture in both primary and secondary education from 65 countries some 10 million US dollars. Again, the scholars are selected by the Board of Directors with the advice of authorities of the respective fields.

Wishing to keep contact and interact both with each other and with the Foundation, the first scholars of the Onassis Foundation established the Scholars’ Association ( in 1986. Counting more than 1,600 members, the Scholars’ Association (has a great work to display. Lectures, conferences and cultural and scientific events are on the main priorities of the Association’s agenda, whereas the quarterly newsletter ¿½ is published and sent through to its members, wishing to be up-to-date concerning the advance of their members’ research or profession worldwide.

Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation forms a pioneer within the institutions that greatly contribute to the uplifting of the Greek society. Constantly aiming at contributing as much as it gets to the Greek society and civilization, Onassis Foundation is the cornerstone of social advancement.
