ROMEMUN OPENING CEREMONY AT FAO
2013-03-08 12:33:02 - Rome Model United Nations (RomeMUN) is celebrating the International Women's Day with a workshop on women's rights chaired by US Embassy in Rome, FAO and IFAD consultants in gender issues.

Rome Model United Nations (RomeMUN), the largest UN simulation of Europe, is getting ready to celebrate International Women's Day. Today, at the Hall of the Parliamentary Groups of Via Campo Marzio, Rome, at 14.30 CET time, will take place a workshop on women's rights, chaired by Sharon Ketchum- Public Affairs officer of the Embassy of the United States; Eve Crowley- Deputy Director of the Gender Division , Equity and Rural Employment of FAO and Clare Bishop-Sambrook- IFAD consultant on gender issues.

The meeting will focus on the discrimination that women face in terms of access rights, ownership and management of land. In addition, it will detail the third Millennium Development Goal which targets gender equality and women's empowerment.

The workshop is part

of the second day of the Rome Model United Nations conference. The meetings of the seven committees in which were divided the 1200 participants from all over the world, will take place in the most charming and prestigious places of the Eternal City.

The young delegates are ready to get to the heart of the work, loaded of the enthusiasm and inspiration they have received from the distinguished experts which have intervened during the opening ceremony, as the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Staffan De Mistura, who recalled some key moments of his 40-year career in the United Nations - the siege of Dubrovnik and the first operation under the auspices of the UN, which has seen, during the Cold War, the joint cooperation between NATO (Britain, Germany, Italy and Canada) and the Warsaw Pact (Russia and Poland) to feed 870 000 Ethiopians.

A great encouragement came from the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, who in his greeting message to the young delegates wrote: “Your participation in this Model UN comes at a time when the international community increasingly recognizes the power of young people to change our world. I count on you to use the negotiating skills you learn in Model UN to help navigate the real-world problems we face. Join forces with likeminded individuals and groups to promote understanding and generate positive change. This will enrich you as individuals and enhance our common future.”
