Oberthur Technologies, one of the world’s largest providers of security, identification solutions and services based on smart card technologies, announced today that it has activated over 30 million SIM cards, just 18 months after a commercial launch for over-the-air SIM card activation with Vivo, the largest mobile operator in Brazil.

Benefiting from Oberthur Technologies’ expertise in SIM cards, applications and Over-The-Air management, the Smart HLR solution provided to Vivo introduces an innovative way to activate mobile subscriptions with just-in-time resource allocation. This remote activation platform avoids the pre-provision mobile subscriptions on SIM cards, currently necessary prior to distribution, thus allowing mobile operators to allocate phone numbers at the time of subscription activation. This solution is welcomed by mobile operators as it

offers a dramatic reduction in costs related to phone number acquisition and optimisation of operational efficiency.

“Through our Smart HLR solution we currently activate 2.5 million SIM cards per month with Vivo. Reaching the milestone of 30 million cards in less than 18 months after the launch, demonstrates Oberthur Technologies’ commitment to helping our customers optimise operational efficiency and to improving end-user experience with high-grade solutions.” said Arnaud de La Chapelle, Managing Director, Solutions Business Unit, at Oberthur Technologies.
