The National Television Awards are not quite the UK equivalent to The Academy Awards but are a big deal nevertheless as the famous faces from all of the United Kingdom's top TV programmes gather for a night of awards and celebration.
For all the NTA nominations and live online streaming of the ceremony:
This year there are very long lists of nominations in each category so there is a greater than usual level of uncertainty about the eventual winners. You can be sure the likes of Coronation Street and Eastenders will feature very prominently though!
The National Television Awards are the most prominent ceremony for which the results are voted on by the general public. Because of the way the awards
are decided, winners are not given the title "Best", but rather "Most Popular". The ceremony was traditionally held annually in October and hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald. However, after no ceremony was held in 2009, McDonald stepped down from the role, which passed to Dermot O'Leary.
Unlike the BAFTAs and other similar awards ceremonies, the National Television Awards allow foreign programmes to be nominated, providing they have been screened on a British channel during the eligible time period. For example, American series Desperate Housewives was nominated in the 2005 Most Popular Drama category. The O2 Arena (visually typeset in branding as The O2 arena, referred to as North Greenwich Arena in context of the Summer Olympics and Paralympics) is a multi-purpose indoor arena located in the centre of The O2, a large entertainment complex on the Greenwich peninsula in London, England.
