NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., April 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- New Jersey After 3 (NJA3) hosted their 1st Annual Step Exhibition on Saturday, April 28. Thanks to generous funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, New Jersey Health Initiatives, over 165 after school students in over 8 sites across New Jersey participated in the event at Seton Hall University.
The debut showcased the skills learned and developed from over 3-months of training with Step Choreographer Jessica Morales, aka Remo, who was recently featured on MTV's "True Life: I'm Stepping", as she became #1
Step Choreographer in the nation by winning the National Championship in January 2007.
Remo Productions' Stepping Program was instituted as part of New Jersey After 3's broader Kid Fit Initiative -- aimed at reducing childhood obesity and increasing children's physical activity levels. Additionally, this program offered students an opportunity to learn about the art of stepping and its history in the African American community. It also demonstrated positive ways to facilitate important character building components, such as, conflict resolution and team work.
New Jersey After 3 after-school programs that participated in this year's Step Exhibition include: Newark Museum, Hurden Looker School (Hillside); Newark Museum George Washington Elementary School (Hillside); Boys and Girls Club of Clifton, Clifton School number 17 (Clifton); Boys and Girls Club of Trenton at Mott and Gregory schools (Trenton); Education Works at Luis Munoz Rivera School (Trenton); Boys and Girls Club of Jersey City, Alfred E. Zampella School (Jersey City); Metro YMCA of the Oranges, Whitney Houston Academy (East Orange) and Communities in Schools, Miller School (Newark).
